I'm no expert in this area, but I do know that conservators absolutely don't want the artists anywhere their work. He said that when he has polished the last part of the wooden sculpture, and stands before the finished piece, he is at peace with the artwork. His job is complete, and the sculpture is no longer his, but the world's (or whoever decides to buy it).
