I am an artist as well. While Fredericksburg is a far cry from NYC or LA, I can say as a gallery owner that great art is great art and we were happy to get our hands on it no matter how we heard about it. He was an exception to the rule by far-- came into the gallery with his portfolio, which I then actually kept a month for us to look at. With galleries downsizing their staffs, there's pretty much no one available to go through the packages. For most galleries that would mean an artist walking in unannounced and presenting their work. The artist may also have no idea the history, background, or type of art of a certain gallery. The gallery owner was forced to reject the artist right on the spot or to blow them off.
