More Chelsea Geometries

Tenth Avenue at 20th Street

.

The ubiquitous construction in Chelsea is rapidly turning a human-scale, bricks-and-brownstone neighborhood into a steel-and-glass environment that will soon be financially out of reach to most of the folks who live there now. The one bright spot to all of this activity is the alfresco geometry of the construction sites, like the one above.

Behind that big blue wall is the General Theological Seminary, which occupies the block between Ninth and Tenth Avenues, and 20th and 21st Streets. If you plan to visit New York, you might like to know that the seminary houses the newly opened Desmond Tutu Center, a reasonably priced (at least for now) place to stay in the heart of Chelsea. I'm not sure about this, but renting a room there might give you access to the seminary's hidden gem, a gated park on its ample grounds.

As for the truck below--spotted, I think, on 26th Street--it's a little chunk of blue-collar minimalism for the open road.

Behind the big blue wall is General Theological Seminary, not Union.
