A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of Facebook . . .

. . . I came across this

Sunday in the Park with the Legacy of George

This image is from Laura Moriarty's FB page. I went for the quick and easy visual, while Nancy Natale, on her Art in the Studio blog, writes a longer piece that includes the original photo of Officer Pepper Spray and includes background to the story of his spewing at UC Davis. Natale is outraged and she'll tell you why. Who can blame her? Please read it.

11.23.11: I added pics to the Political Stuff page here on the blog, with a link to a Tumblr site that is gathering all the Sgt. Pepper memes in one place.

Love this! And now I find your political cartoons....

Linda,
The cartoons aren't mine. I've just been compiling them, mostly from Facebook.

Indeed this is offensive. It can be interpreted a lot of different notions depending on the culture. And to think that FB is international.

The good thing about the visibility of FB is that these egregious actions--however embarrassing to our democracy--do not go unnoticed. How many times did Bull Connor turn the firehoses on Civil Rights protesters in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963 before the press and population took notice? Now, citizen journalists are Tweeting and posting on scene before the satellite trucks are even dispatched by the news stations.

Just before your post on Sunday evening, Buy Art, MSNBC reported that the two officers involved in the "pepper spray incident" had been placed on leave, and that the president of the 10-campus UC system was "appalled" by the actions of the campus police. Now let's hope amends--and changes-- are made.

Is Dow Chemical the maker of pepper spray? Maybe while we're at it, we should put a little pressure on the companies that are manufacturing this stuff. None of the uses of pepper spray I've seen on the Occupy protestors thus far have been justifiable and I bet manufacturers' sales reps are having a field day right about now.
