Fair and Loathing: Coincidences, Trends and a Coupla WTFs
There was a lot of painting at the fairs. A lot. Figuration and abstraction, gestural and geometric, contemporary and modern, young artists and veteran painters, from blue-chip galleries and emerging dealers. What follows is a broad look. I don't love everything, but I do love that I have so much to show you--and it's fairly representative of some trends, including a lot of shiny, a fair amount of black, a surprising amount of pink, and some strongly material elements. As much as possible I tried to include enough of the floor or wall to give you a sense of scale (my criterion for "big" was wider than an arm span), and I included a fair number of details.

at first glance, I loved the Sean Scully from the German gallery, Despina Stokow, Rodrigo Andrade, Shaan Syed, William Conger, and Ron Gorchow.
I know if I could see all of them up close and in person, I will add to the list.

Hello Joanne. I took a good look this morning. It was fun to see P. Steir, and S. Scully to see what they are doing these days -- I am somewhat familiar w/their work and have seen them in shows. I was attracted to K. Jorres' bright colors and overlapping. The texture of R. Andrade was interesting and I think very adaptable for wax. I would like to go someday to the Fair but I would have to do it in 3 hr. blocks. I can get over saturated and feel bombarded and then start running around. Again, thanks for taking the effort to post this.
There were some wonderful paintings there! I'm glad to see that big, juicy (or delicate) painting is still going strong. Scully's new work was a surprise. Lots of interesting new - to me - painters. Thanks.
Some beautiful work here............reminds me a bit of contemporary bauhaus with a jump in time to de Kooning
