Three Blog Questions (Help!)

1) Is there a way to save my blog to my hard drive, or to get it onto a flash drive, in the format it's in? .
.
2) What do I do when I've reached my blog limit? (I'm at about 68% now)
.
3) If I decide to go go a different site, how to I take all my blog posts with me?

Is this any help?

Joanne, I love your blog. Thanks for the recommendation for "The Artist's Guide", which I've just started.

If you were to use something like Wordpress (Wordpress.com), you could import all your posts to the new blog or even website. You could then save them as an export file and have them on your hard drive. I did this for a year or so on my website, but have since removed the blog from my site.

Hope this is helpful.

These are helpful. Thanks.
Keep the info and suggestions coming!

How you save it depends on what you want to do with it.

1) To save it all on a hard drive, in files viewable in a browser just like the blog itself, you could use a website capture program like Page Nest (http://pagenest.com/) or HTTrack (http://www.httrack.com/). I haven't tried any of these.
2) I don't know anything about your size limits.
3) If you want to re-create your blog on another site, there are conversion procedures, which you can find by a Google search on something like "convert blogger to wordpress". Sorry, I haven't tried any of these, either.

Kristine's find looks useful, but I suspect the downloaded file will not have any of the actual images--just the links to where they are on the web (from which, in principle, they could be downloaded and saved, but there are way too many).

Good luck!

In addition to Kristine's link, this might be helpful:

I'm not sure which blogging software you're looking at, but if you go to Wordpress.org (not .com), you can download a free copy of WordPress which you can install and host on your own site/domain - then the quota would just depend on your hosting company.

And, once it's installed, it's not difficult to host your own blog. I prefer WordPress over Blogger for managing my blog. Especially in regards to uploading photos.

Hope this helps.

Hi Joanne!

Google actually has instructions on how to import and export your blog files. If you start a Wordpress or other blog format that isn't Blogger, you may or may not be able to import the information but I'm sure there are instructions out there for you.

Good luck!

Oops, sorry! I didn't see that first link - looks like I'm repeating Kristine's recommendation. :)

Joanne,

According to Blogger:
http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=42348

Number of Blogs: You can have as many blogs as you like on one account.

Number of Posts: There is no limit on the number of posts you can have on one blog. They will all be saved on your account (unless you manually delete them) regardless of whether you are publishing archives or not.

Size of Posts: Individual posts do not have a specific size limit, but very large posts may run you up against the page size limit. (See the next item.)

****** this may be an issue:
Number of Pictures: Up to 1 GB of total storage, shared with Picasa Web
See: https://www.google.com/accounts/ManageStorage

When uploading images to Blogger use only GIF or JPEG formats (BMP, TIF etc are space hogs) -- I use a lot of images, especially in the financial blog where they are big and my total usage is only 5%. A large jpeg file might be 250kb but the same file as a TIFF will take more like 8mb (8000kb)

If you actually run up against the limit, you could just pay the $20 a year for additional storage. It's reasonable and a lot less hassle than moving the blog

I was just about to say - to all intents and purposes there is no limit any more. I'm guessing it'll also work a bit like gmail tells me I'll never run out of space and keeps upping the space I have access to.

I don't think Google is going to want to get rid of well established blogs with lots of visitors any time soon - well not until they've shot themselves in the foot first! ;)

That said it's always a good idea to keep the size of image files as low as possible as that makes a blog load faster.

Thanks, folks.

These responses are very helpful. If it won't cost me much to expand my site, then I'll stick with Blogger. Now the only thing I need to work on is saving the site to my hard drive--just because I'm someone who likes redundant redundancy. Fortunately I just had a big-ass hard drive installed!

Could you start a Flickr site and link your photos from there?

Hey Joanne,

In addition to being an encaustic painter, I also build websites and custom Wordpress blogs -- blogs that are embedded in and look like the rest of your main site. And to echo one of the other posts, you can definitely import your blogger posts (real post, not a picture of it) into a Wordpress blog.

So if you're ever interested --

Joanne - try doing what I do. Subscribe to your own blog so that every time you post you automatically get a copy of your blog post. Then should anything awful happen you at least have a record of what you posted. You can even set it up so that email automatically files itself.

hope this helps.
